THE RIVER OF WEALTH ...

Dear Reader,

Does the garden metaphor resonate with you? Are you busy chasing butterflies with a net or are you growing a garden? The garden is the first step. Here is the second. You can water your garden with a bucket, or you can water it with a permanent river.

We can all relate to the idea of growing a garden. But running our own river? Every great Wealth Creator has created their own river. When we grow our river, we grow our flow. As we grow our flow, we grow our attraction. At first glance, the two metaphors are similar: as with the butterflies, the water in the river is temporary; as with the garden, the river is permanent.

There are, however, four important additions:

1. Water
Water, like money, flows. Money is already flowing around this planet at an unprecedented rate. Great Wealth Creators have achieved their wealth not by ‘making money’ but by ‘creating flow’. They have learnt how to redirect some of this money flow through themselves and their enterprises. Wealth then, is largely about good plumbing. There are rules to this plumbing, and the structure of Wealth Dynamics is based on these rules.

2. Flow
Flow is about more than cash flow. It is about life flow. Each of us creates our greatest wealth when we are in our own personal flow. Those of us who build a river around this flow attract all the resources, people and opportunities in the same way that a leaf thrown in a river will naturally be attracted to the central current. When we are creating the right river, it feels right for us. When you find your flow, you begin to love life and live life fully.

3. Path
There are different paths to running a river, and we each have a natural path of least resistance. Wealth Dynamics classifies these paths into eight profiles. Each is a different game with different players and different rules. Until you follow your natural path, life feels like a struggle and you will find little attraction. Many of us are operating at a fraction of our true potential. Focus on your natural path and life soon changes from hard-to-get to easy-to-give.

4. Purpose
In a river, flow assumes exit as well as entry. Giving more opens the way to receiving more. With flow, a bigger income goes hand-in-hand with a bigger outcome. In the limited time we have on this planet, we choose our power to create and our power to contribute. When you live in your flow you maximize this power. You attract the resources to leave a lasting legacy. Your path leads to your purpose.

Keep making magic,

Roger

$2 Billion in 2 weeks

Dear Reader,

Marissa Mayer, the Cupcake Princess, is out shopping. First, she bought News App, Summly for $30 million. Then, last week, she bought Tumblr for $1.1 billion. This week she bought online gaming company Playerscale and put a bid in for Hulu at around $800 million...

In 2 weeks Marissa has spent all Yahoo’s cash and more - $2 billion of it. Why is she doing that? Because that’s the way she shops. Here’s 3 shopping tips from Marissa that every entrepreneur can learn from:

1. IT’S NOT ABOUT THE GRAPES

Known fondly as “The Grape Ape” by her family for her love of grapes, Marissa remembers her first big shopping moment, when trying to buy grapes in Switzerland as a student: "The first day, I went to the grocery store and got in trouble because, it turns out, you buy produce in Europe completely differently.” She couldn’t work out how to weigh the grapes and print the price sticker.

"This woman just started yelling at me in German. I remember going back to my apartment and just being like, "What was I thinking? I don't speak the language, I can't even buy produce here."

Marissa realised that to master a market it wasn’t about the product, but the process. So when she went to Stanford, she committed to learning the latest technology: “My first week at Stanford I bought a computer, and it was the first computer I ever owned. I had to be taught how to turn it on and even how to use a mouse...”

Her path led her to interview for a small 15-man company called Google in 1999, where she became the first female engineer, working her way up to overseeing many of Google’s main products before leaving last July to join Yahoo as CEO, while having a baby.

2. NOT ALL CUPCAKES ARE CREATED EQUAL

Over the last 10 years, Marissa has become known as the “Cupcake Princess” because of her mastery of all things cupcake. She is famous for buying up all the cupcake recipe books she could find, creating a spreadsheet of all the ingredients, and then testing all the recipes until she had calculated the best aggregate cupcakes from all the possibilities.

The result after all the complicated research was often the simplest solution. Marissa put the same principle into her product designs, and is the person responsible for the very simple, white Google home page with just one search bar (Yes, men, it was a woman who cleaned up your screen). As she says, "Google has the functionality of a really complicated Swiss Army knife, but the home page is our way of approaching it closed. It's simple, it's elegant, you can slip it in your pocket, but it's got the great doodad when you need it.”

Her current shopping spree, to re-create Yahoo as a mobile company by buying the top mobile millennial brands, is about finding the billion dollar cupcakes - not about looking for bargains, but looking at everything, finding the best and paying top dollar.

3. STRETCH YOURSELF

Last September Marissa had a baby: “I’ve come to realize that being a mother makes me a better executive, because motherhood forces prioritization. Being a mom gives you so much more clarity on what is important...”

When prioritizing, Marissa puts the big, scary things first - like spending $2 billion to stay ahead of the curve. "When you do something you're not ready to do, that's when you push yourself and you grow. It's when you sort of move through that moment of discomfort of, 'Wow, what have I gotten myself into this time?'"

“I realized that sometimes when you have that feeling and you push through it, something really great happens. That's when you have a breakthrough."

What process and market are you mastering, and how are you stretching yourself to settle for nothing less than the very best in your market? What lesson can you learn from a 37 year old mum who has built a personal net worth of $300 million?

As for Marissa’s first 10 months at Yahoo, how is the company doing? Yahoo’s share price has grown from $15 when Marissa took over to $26 today, adding $10 billion to the value of the business. Making $10 billion in 10 months while having a baby? Suddenly her shopping spree doesn’t sound so big after all, and apparently she’s just got started.

Keep making magic,

Roger

My lesson from Richard Branson

Income = Incoming

Dear Reader,

I was on Richard’s private island, Necker Island, last week, and was lucky enough to have a week with the Billionaire. Here’s one conversation we had that stuck with me...

We were talking about problems with money. Richard is a self-professed dyslexic, and it turns out his mix up extends to numbers. He said “Today I was speaking to some of my finance team. They were talking about some idea which would mean $25,000 from some 1,000,000 people. So I got out my note book and began multiplying the two together. It ended up with a lot of zeros. It was a little embarrassing because I had to ask them ‘Does that make billions or trillions?’”

Of course I laughed while wondering if he was being serious or just joking (it turned out it was a bit of both). I asked “So if you don’t like numbers, how do you make your businesses so financially successful?”

He replied “It’s really all about people, not numbers. I just look for great people. As for the money, I just make sure the numbers coming in are generally bigger than the numbers going out, and then everything tends to take care of itself.”

So what’s the lesson from a billionaire?

To me, it was that he doesn’t see income. He sees incoming. Many of us are so busy at the outcome, we miss the income.

Many of us are so busy with our output, we miss the input. Richard Branson is a master of flow, and as long as the flow feels positive, he can focus on the important things in life.

What could you do today to grow your incoming? Incoming connections, incoming relations, incoming talent. Attract the best people, with the best input, and the rest will take care of itself.

When we focus on the inside instead of outside, input instead of output, income instead of outcome, we're more likely to inspire instead of expire...

Roger

March 2013

Dear Member,

This week Yahoo bought 17 year old Nick D’Aloisio’s iPhone app, Summly, for $30 million. When Yahoo was founded in 1994, Nick wasn’t even born yet.

What’s he doing with $30 million? As Nick says, "I can't even buy a car because I don't have a licence yet." So he’s going to buy a new bag. Why? “Mine is broken; it’s old and the strap’s not working.”

3 STEPS TO $30 MILLION

Nick’s app has delivered over 90 million news summaries in the four short months since he launched it on his 17th birthday in November. But Nick isn’t even old enough to be a Director of his company, so his mum is the Director while he sits in as Company Secretary.

What has gotten Nick to success so quickly in 15 months when so many of us are still struggling after 15 years? Here’s 3 steps his journey has in common with most super-success stories:

PROBLEM + PASSION = $300K SOLUTION

Nick’s Summly App was the solution to a real world problem that no one else was solving well. As Nick relates, “I was 15 years old and I was revising for some kind of history exam. The problem was I was trying to find information that was useful to me.”

Searching Google on his phone didn’t give him enough detail to know what was or wasn’t a useful link. So he put his own iPhone app together. The app quickly rose up the download ranks and Apple featured it in their store.

Then came a fateful email: “About a month later, the private fund of the Hong Kong billionaire Li-Kashing cold emailed me and expressed an interest to invest, but they didn’t realize I was 15...It turned out that they actually liked my age because it demonstrated I was net-native, so I’d only grown up with the Internet. They flew to London about a month later and invested $300,000. That kick-started this whole journey.”

$300K FUNDING + EXPERTISE = $1.3M REPUTATION

Nick used the money to bring in world experts to help relaunch the app. At 16 years old, he teamed up with the leaders in Natural Language Processing, Stanford Research Institute (Who create Apple’s SIRI - named after the company’s initials, SRI).

In between high school classes in London, Nick worked with SRI in the US by phone and text messages to build the new app. SRI’s solid reputation and Nick’s focus on approaching well known celebrities to help him attracted high profile investors Stephen Fry, Ashton Kutcher and Yoko Ono who invested $1.3 million. Nick made the most of his investors, with Stephen Fry starring in the launch video for Summly.

$1.3M REPUTATION + SINGLE-MINDED FOCUS = $30M STORY

With world class partners and world class investors, Nick gave up full-time school at the end of 2011, with his parent’s blessings: “I talked about it with them and my headmaster and we decided it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and it would be silly not to run with it. Now, looking back, I can say it was a massive gamble. But it was a good gamble.”

From a standing start to $30 million, Nick has taken the age old 1-2-3 formula of solving a problem in a smart way, then using the resources he attracts to bring in the best talent, and leveraging that to attract the most influential partners.

What made him think he could just go and knock on the door of the best companies and most well known people in the world? As he says "I was naive. I didn't know I couldn't."

Nick is now reflecting on this week’s news: “Numbing is probably the best word to describe it. It’s a shock to be honest. The only thing I can take from this is that I’m genuinely kind of proud that I’ve been getting a lot of tweets where young people are commenting and saying, “This is really inspirational, I want to go and start my own thing.”

How many of these 3 steps in the 1-2-3 formula have you taken in your business? What can you do to upgrade your product, your talent or your partners?

Or maybe it’s time to be a kid again, be naive again, when you didn't know you can't. And start something entirely new.

Keep Making Magic,

Roger James Hamilton

February 2013

Dear Member,

If you’re having a hard day, read Woman Entrepreneur Ping Fu’s story. She has had an intense journey from Chinese Exile to Inc Entrepreneur of the Year. In the last month, she sold her 3D Printing Company, Geomagic, and has now been thrown into new headwinds.

“Notice that the stiffest tree is most easily cracked, while the bamboo or willow survives by bending with the wind.” - Bruce Lee

BEND DON’T BREAK

China’s Cultural Revolution began when Ping Fu was 8. Her parents were sent for ‘re-education’ and she was left to look after her 4 year old sister. As Ping says, "Father and mother were taken to a local concentration camp. They were screaming my name. Then they disappeared.”

When soldiers threw Ping’s little sister in a pond to drown, she jumped in to save her, and the soldiers punished her by beating and raping her. She was 10.

Ping was forced to work and study in factories for 10 years, missing a school education. When the Cultural Revolution ended, as a university student Ping publicised the Chinese government’s killing of baby girls. She was forced to leave the country for the US with $80.

On arriving in the US at age 25, she was kidnapped for 3 days by a Vietnamese man who she met at the airport, before Police were called, and she was delivered to the University of New Mexico in a police squad car. With little English, she worked as a babysitter and cleaning lady to pay for her university degree in computer science.

As she says, "You get caught in a traffic jam and that's a bad day? Put it in perspective.” With her memories of how hard things had been, she says “There aren't many bad days here in comparison.”

In 1991, when Ping was 32, a friend came to her with a problem - How to digitally compute spaces in 3D? Ping remembered a Chinese Proverb “The empty space with a cup is what makes the cup useful.” She worked out the equations to shape the empty space with her husband, and in the process came across the new concept of 3D printing.

She got excited by what 3D printing could achieve in printing personalised products. As she recalls: “We’ll call it the Personal Factory,” “I told Mike Facello, (one of her first employees). “It’s intuitive. People already know the PC. Now we’ll have the PF.” “Cute, Ping,” he observed. “You’ve managed to name an industry after your own initials.”

FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS

The ‘Aha’ moment for her new business came from a dream that day, which went back to her childhood: “I was possessed by the idea of revolutionizing the manufacturing process, just as Henry Ford once had with his invention of the assembly line. That night when I fell asleep, I had a dream about the years I’d spent in factories in China.”

“I awoke the next morning with visions of spinning parts and shining metal floating through my head. I found that I could recall details about those years that I hadn’t been able to for decades. I thought to myself, No wonder I came up with the “personal factory” idea for my business. Working in factories had ingrained not just the knowledge but also the visceral experience of manufacturing into my brain and body.”

A LUXURY YOU CAN’T AFFORD: THE LUXURY OF DOUBT

Her company, Geomagic, launched, and her first printed product was a Pikachu Doll. But times were tough. In 2000, the money they had raised had run out, the tech bubble had burst, and Ping had the choice of closing Geomagic or battling it out. As she says: "All of my instincts kicked in," she says. "In a crisis mode, you lose all self-doubt - at least I do. I couldn't afford the luxury of doubt.”

She decided to focus at the dental industry with custom-fit crowns, and signed a $1.8m deal that saved the company. From there, the company and her success gradually took off. In 2005 she became Inc Entrepreneur of the Year. In 2010 Obama selected her to join his National Advisory Council for Entrepreneurship. In early 2013, she sold Geomagic and published her memoirs “Bend not Break”.

The book, which shares her story, is getting heavy criticism from Chinese critics for its portrayal of China. She is being called a liar, interested only in self-promotion. How does she counter her ongoing challenges? By recalling her grand father:

“Shanghai Papa told me “There are three friends of winter: the pine tree, the plum blossom, and bamboo: Pine trees are strong. They remain happy and green throughout the year. In the unbearable heat of summer and the severe cold of winter, they stand unperturbed."”

“"The crimson petals of the plum blossom gleam brilliantly against the white snow. The ability to bloom in the midst of misfortune suggests dignity and forbearance under harsh circumstances." Shanghai Papa then walked over to a grove of bamboo. "This is the third friend of winter. Bamboo is flexible, bending with the wind but never breaking, capable of adapting to any circumstance. It suggests resilience, meaning that we have the ability to bounce back from even the most difficult times."

Shanghai Papa smiled and continued, "The Taoists understand that there can be no summer without winter, no ups without downs, no growth without decay. Your ability to thrive depends, in the end, on your attitude to your life circumstances. When you are like the three friends of winter, you take everything in stride with grace, putting forth energy when it is needed, yet always staying calm inwardly."

When you look at the pressures on you today. Will you be the pine, the plum blossom or the bamboo? Will you bend or break? Take a tip from Ping, and remember that, whatever the winter, spring is just around the corner.

Disclaimer: I live in a Bamboo House (www.greenvillagebali.com) and my children go to a Bamboo School (www.greenschool.org), so I am not impartial on the benefits of bamboo :-)

Ping Fu is fast becoming one of America's most celebrated female entrepreneurs, not just because the tech company she founded is revolutionising the manufacturing process in the digital age, but also because her own life story represents a triumph over long odds. She was just eight years old when her life was turned upside down by Mao's cultural revolution. She endured years of abuse before being thrown out of China. Three decades later she is an adviser to President Obama on innovation. What lessons lie behind this extraordinary journey?

January 2013

Dear Member,

How to fail your way to your first $1 billion

How Sara Blakely lost her way to a billion dollars: 8 years ago Sara lost in the finale of Richard Branson’s reality TV show “Rebel Billionaire”. The loss was one of many that turned Sara into the world’s youngest self-made female billionaire...

Sara’s entire life has been about failure. She says “My dad encouraged us to fail. Growing up, he would ask us what we failed at that week. If we didn't have something, he would be disappointed. It changed my mindset at an early age that failure is not the outcome, failure is not trying. Don't be afraid to fail.”

In the 1990s Sara became an expert in failure by selling fax machines (remember those?) and was often so terrified of meeting prospects she would burst into tears and drive around the block to calm down before her sales calls.

Overheating from the stress of it, she decided to cut the feet off her pantyhose to cool down. That was her ‘aha’ moment. As she says “When I cut the feet out of my pantyhose that one time, I saw it as my sign.” She decided to start a business to sell the footless pantyhose in 1998 with just $5,000 - all of her savings - and called the company “Spanx”.

Did the failure stop then? No - “When I invented Spanx I heard 'no' for two years. It didn't faze me. I didn't have a special ability, it was sheer drive and telling myself to keep going.”

FAILING BIG

Working from her kitchen, she made a push for publicity, which simply means your failure becomes more public. For example, her experience with the English: “On the BBC, I was asked what Spanx could do for women in the U.K. I said, 'It smoothes and separates your fanny.' The interviewer looked mortified. I had no idea what was going on, so I kept rambling on about fannies until he stopped me and said, 'I think you mean bum.' The word fanny means vagina in England.”

Her publicity led her to Oprah and Richard Branson’s “Rebel Billionaire” in 2005. She ended up losing that too, but the show gave her a chance to realise what she really wanted to do with her future success - Start a charity for women. Branson gave her $750,000 to start her charity, the Sarah Blakely Foundation, to support women leaders.

What happens when your failure rate goes up? Your luck rate goes up too.

To face her failures, Sara had luck on her back - literally!

“I found my lucky red backpack from college in my mom's attic and became determined that it was going to change my path for Spanx because I kept hearing no, no, no. It went with me every step of the way, to the point of being made fun of because I went to Neiman Marcus headquarters with this old backpack as my presentation bag. Now, with the Sarah Blakely Foundation, every woman we send to college or help start a business receives a lucky red backpack. They're usually more excited about that than the money, which I totally get. The backpack is a symbol of their potential.”

THE BIGGEST RISK

This year Sara Blakely became the youngest female Billionaire in the world, with Spanx generating over $250 million in annual revenue. Sara puts this down to her sheer determination:

"The biggest risk in life is not risking. Every risk you take in life is in direct proportion to the reward. If I'm afraid of something, it's the next thing I have to go do. That's just the way I've been."

What are your big dreams? Where are your greatest risks?

Get your own lucky charm on your back, cut off the feet of whatever is holding you back, turn on the music and take the path that Sara took.

Today, 41 year-old Sara makes many speeches to inspire other entrepreneurs, and even the song she uses to get in her zone is the anthem to failure. As she says - “Eminem's 'Lose Yourself' is my go-to song to pump myself up if I'm having a tough time or if I get really nervous right before a speech.”

Now that she’s a billionare, her mission is “World Butt Domination” through Spanx and supporting women through her foundation, which has donated $17.5 million to charities supporting girls and women in South Africa.

Her failure has meant her wealth has come with humility, which is a different kind of wealth: “I feel like money makes you more of who you already are. If you’re an a**hole, you become a bigger a**hole. If you’re nice, you become nicer. Money is fun to make, fun to spend and fun to give away.”

Use Sara's story to inspire your day: Lose yourself and win the game.

Roger James Hamilton

October 2012

Dear Member,

BORN TO FLY

Felix Baumgartner has “Born to Fly” tattooed on his forearm.

He made freefall history by skydiving from 24 miles high this month. He also made Youtube history with 8 million viewers watching the livestream. What’s the extraordinary path that Felix took to make his six minutes of history?

Felix began skydiving when he was 16 years old. By 19 he was performing skydiving exhibitions for Red Bull. By 29 he was World BASE jump champion.

Then came the world records: World record BASE jump from Kuala Lumpur’s Petronas Towers in 1999; World record lowest BASE jump from Rio de Janeiro’s Christ the Redeemer in 1999; First winged freefall crossing the English Channel in 2003; World Record BASE jump from the highest bridge in the world, Millau Bridge, France in 2004; BASE jump form the world’s tallest building, Taipei 101 Tower in 2007...

So his new world records this month were really the result of 27 years of jumping and 13 years of world records. They come after a lifetime of dedication to one mission, the one tattoed on his arm: “Born to Fly”.

What one mission are you on? What is the one burning thing that you are dedicating your life to? What’s the big mission you wear on your sleeve ever day?

Even better, what’s the one thing you’re willing to live for and die for that’s worth the tattoo for when it’s cost you the shirt off your back and the sleeve’s not there?

Roger James Hamilton
